Work Experience:

Volunteer(2020-2022)

Responsibilities included organising donations and fundraising at key events. Required strong people-skills to interact with busy passers-by and to encourage a positive in-store experience.

Administrator(2011 - 2013)

Undertook various part-time administrative roles whilst travelling Europe and the Americas.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award(2010)

The four-day expedition involved strong collaboration and team-work skills to navigate challenges including poor weather. Offered an opportunity to reflect and improve on planning skills to better prepare for unexpected events.

Volunteer

Recognise the signs of putting people first as much as we value professional experience. For instance, have they volunteered? Or have they participated in other people-centric sectors like hospitality or care? It’s all about identifying an interest in caring and service.

Neil Eastwood, CEO of Care Friends and author of Saving Social Care

Travelling

This could be an example of a richer experience that has widened horizons and helped them to better connect with to a wide variety of people.

Peter Avis, General Manager of GALVIN AT WINDOWS, London Hilton, and Vice-Chair of the Institute of Hospitality

Life experience

Not only can employees share valuable life experience with their co-workers, but it’s likely that some of the skills they’ve gained in their previous roles can often be transferred in new positions. Regardless of age, apprenticeships are an ideal way for people to reskill or to build on the skills they already have, whether they’re new to their chosen sector or want to progress further.

Jill Whittaker, Managing Director at HIT Training, Connect2Care and The Executive Development Network

Collaboration

Collaboration is more than just great teamwork; this could mean the employee is approachable and could be skilled in rallying a followership within the team, which can be vital when progressing up to management positions

James Hampton, Head of People and Culture at St Austell Brewery

Reflect

Employees who are aware of their own weaknesses or stresses can have a lot of potential. We should value a strong inner voice and individuals with a good understanding of how they best operate in a variety of environments.

James Hampton, Head of People and Culture at St Austell Brewery

Employee potential has been measured purely by proven skills and experience for far too long. It’s time to shake the foundations of the traditional CV.

What would happen if an employee was instead defined by their ambitions, their passions, and their ‘soft’ skills?
