The landscape

An unregulated sector under constant scrutiny

The UK funeral sector is unregulated — despite the level of responsibility it carries.

Anyone can operate in funeral services without holding a qualification, a licence or a minimum standard of training, even while caring for the deceased and supporting families at their most vulnerable. This lack of oversight within the profession has created conditions in which serious failures, neglect and malpractice can occur, leading to numerous media exposures over the years.

Yet it is equally important to recognise that many funeral directors deliver an excellent, transparent and highly ethical service. They support families with professionalism, compassion and integrity — often going far beyond what is expected of them.

However, in an unregulated environment, families face a critical question: how can they reliably identify providers who uphold the highest standards from those who do not? Without clear, consistent benchmarks or external accountability, distinguishing trustworthy, high‑quality funeral directors becomes a challenge at the very moment when people are least equipped to navigate uncertainty.

Scrutiny is ongoing. Expectations are rising.

A practical solution

Apprenticeships: a clear way to demonstrate standards

In the absence of regulation, apprenticeships provide the most credible, recognised framework available for demonstrating professional standards in funeral services.

Funeral service apprenticeships:

Are built to nationally recognised occupational standards

Are externally assessed and quality assured

Embed competence into real roles and day-to-day practice

Create consistency across teams and locations

Support a culture of accountability and professionalism

They allow funeral businesses to show — clearly and confidently — that their standards are taken seriously.
